Canadian jewellery retail sales saw a slight increase in June despite a month-to-month decline in overall sales, according to Statistics Canada[2]’s latest report[3]. The category rose to $308 million, climbing 0.3 per cent month-to-month and 0.8 per cent year-to-year.

Canada’s total retail sales fell to $50.7 billion from the previous month, a drop of 0.2 per cent spurred by decreased sales in 52 per cent of the retail sector. Provincial performance varied, with British Columbia experiencing the most significant stumble of 1.8 per cent. Alberta also broke a five-month streak of increases, plummeting by 1.2 per cent.

Year-to-year, however, the numbers were up, with sales growing by 4.2 per cent. Manitoba led the pack for provincial retail sales increases with a spike of 1.8 per cent, closely followed by the Yukon and its climb of 1.7 per cent. Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia also experienced growth of 1.4 per cent and 1.2 per cent, respectively. The remaining provinces saw minor fluctuations of less than one per cent.

Retail e-commerce sales enjoyed even more significant growth, soaring 18 per cent year-over-year to a total of $1.4 billion. This sector now comprises 2.6 per cent of the trade.
