Every year at Baselworld, the world’s leading brands gather to celebrate and share the latest styles, know-how, and innovation in the horological industry. There was much to celebrate this year as it marked the 100th anniversary of the first ‘Basler Mustermesse,’ or sample fair, which originally made its debut in 1917 with only 29 exhibitors.
Excellence endures
Though the past couple of years have proved challenging with waning global sales, geopolitical and economic concerns, the future does remain promising. “Baselworld 2017 dispelled any concerns about the market as the event has fuelled a renewed spirit of creativity and innovation,” said François Thiébaud, president of the Swiss exhibitors’ committee. “It’s the only show that fully reflects the excellence of the industry by uniting everyone, representing every sector, and putting each and every player on a pedestal to present themselves in the best light.”
Indeed, walking the aisles were 106,000 buyers from more than 100 countries, although attendance was down four per cent from 2016. There were also 200 less exhibitors at this year’s show, a 13 per cent drop from 2016.
Amid rumours it might become a biennial show, Baselworld managing director of, Sylvie Ritter, says it will remain an annual event. However, Ritter admitted the duration of the show will be reduced and the prices adjusted.
Looking ahead to next year, Baselworld 2018 will be held March 22-27.
