2025 national designer of the year and people’s choice winners revealed by Canadian Jewellery Group

The Canadian Jewellery Group (CJG) celebrated standout creativity at its annual Buying Show, where the winners of the 2025 National Designer of the Year and People’s Choice Awards were revealed during the President’s Gala. Now in its second year, the competition continues to highlight the artistry and innovation of independent jewellers across the country.
“We were so impressed by the range and quality of the designs entered into this year’s National Design Award. It showcased such a high standard of craftsmanship and talent, truly inspirational and the very best our industry has to offer. Thank you to all who entered,” said Geoffrey Beattie, CJG National Design Award chairperson, and CJG board member.
Retail members were invited to enter their finest creations—whether earrings, necklaces, or other pieces—valued at up to $5,000 wholesale. Submissions were showcased throughout the two-day event, where they were evaluated by a panel of industry professionals on material quality, craftsmanship, originality, innovation, and overall market appeal. Attendees also had their say, casting ballots to determine the People’s Choice Award. To maintain fairness, all designs were displayed anonymously and identified only by number. The contest was made possible through the support of sponsors MALO and Box Brokers Group.
This year’s top distinction, National Designer of the Year, was awarded to Dana Smith, Kyra Martin, and Linda Bruno of Dana’s Goldsmithing in Port Perry, Ontario. Their winning piece drew inspiration from the northern lights, marrying artistry with a message of Canadian identity and resilience. Crafted in 14k Canadian white gold, the design incorporated Canadian diamonds and sapphires in vivid shades of green, purple, and blue—echoing the aurora borealis dancing across the night sky.
The team behind the design described their creation as a tribute to both the natural beauty of Canada and the enduring sense of unity that binds its people. “In a time when national pride feels especially important, we wanted this piece to symbolize strength and connection,” they shared.
With its blend of craftsmanship, storytelling, and cultural symbolism, the award-winning design underscored why the CJG National Design Award has quickly become a prestigious platform for celebrating Canadian jewellery talent.
Among the finalists for the National Designer of the Year were Rebecca Smith from IJL and Jenna Sim representing Nash Jewellers.
The People’s Choice Award went to Valerie Giff, with the piece crafted by goldsmith Yonghun Kwon of Davidson’s Jewellers in Ottawa, Ontario. Giff’s design drew inspiration from her admiration for the rich spectrum of sapphire hues, enhanced by the brilliance of diamonds. She combined multiple shapes and shades of sapphire to create a flowing, vibrant display of color.

Rebecca Smith of IJL and Jenna Sim of Nash Jewellers were also recognized as runners-up for the People’s Choice Award.
The Canadian Jewellery Group extended congratulations to all participants for showcasing innovation and exceptional skill in Canadian jewellery design. They also expressed anticipation for the next National Design Award competition in 2026.
