Fraud alert issued over suspected insurance impersonation call

A suspected phone scam targeting jewellery businesses has been reported, involving an individual falsely claiming to represent Jewelers Mutual.

The caller, identifying herself as “Jeanette,” requested information about a package allegedly sent in December 2025, and asked for a return call to a number with an East Coast area code. The insurer has confirmed the outreach did not originate from its organization and is likely fraudulent, advising retailers to avoid sharing sensitive information without confirmation.

Early-morning smash-and-grab at Surrey Mall

A jewellery store at Central City Shopping Centre in Surrey, B.C., was burglarized around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, when three suspects forced entry into the mall, used electric bikes to reach the store quickly, and smashed display cases before stealing merchandise.

Surrey Police are investigating the incident.

After-hours mall burglary highlights rising security risks

A jewellery store at Cambridge Centre in Ontario was targeted in a late-night break-in on April 15, highlighting ongoing concerns around organized retail crime.

According to reports, three suspects entered the enclosed mall via a service corridor at approximately 10:15 p.m. Once inside, they disabled surveillance by covering a mall security camera using a pole and tape. The group then cut through an exterior wall to access the store, where multiple showcases were forced open, and merchandise was removed.

In a co-ordinated effort, another suspect entered a back room and dismantled electronics, cutting phone lines and targeting the store’s video recording system. The suspects fled in a vehicle as police arrived; the vehicle has since been recovered.
