The value of gemstones is partially influenced by the name of their colour.
That’s one of the discussions experts debated at the 2015 Canadian Gem Conference, held recently in Vancouver.
“It is easier to sell something with a sexy name like ‘champagne diamond,’ but at the same time, consumers need to fully understand what they are buying,” said Donna Hawrelko, president of the Canadian Gemmological Association (CGA), which hosted the three-day conference.
Çi?dem Lüle, head of special projects at Gemworld International, says laboratory reports for gemstones should be sought from reputable organizations to provide all parties with the necessary information to make valuation decisions.
Gary Roskin, executive director of the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA), gave the keynote presentation, emphasizing the importance of colour nomenclature in the coloured gemstone market.
“It is so important there is consistency and expert information with regard to gemstone colour naming to ensure consumer confidence,” Hawrelko added.
