Equipment used to flag potential lab-grown diamonds can be cost-prohibitive for some, which can add to the problem of undisclosed synthetics in the pipeline.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has uncovered a large number of undisclosed diamonds in a parcel recently submitted for analysis at the GIA’s melee analysis centre in Mumbai.

The parcel contained 323 melee diamonds and 101 of them were chemical vapour deposition (CVD) synthetic diamonds.

Though it isn’t unusual to find some synthetics in parcels submitted to the GIA’s analysis centres, “this is the first time we have seen such a significant percentage of CVD melee mixed with natural melee.
